Exploring the Cape Land Wineries

Cape Town, South Africa

This morning we were treated to a cooking demo. Alison showed us how to make Malva Pudding. It is an absolutely delicious apricot cake smothered in a butter rich sauce. It was then topped up with a scoop of toffee ice cream. (Alison asked for vanilla but Sidney provided vanilla – may have been taking his life in his hands there a little.). I think there will be a lot of people making Le Calabash Malva Pudding at home. The cooking class was held in a private villa over looking the estate – quite impressive location! Lanzerac Estate was the first stop on our Bacchanalian journey. (Sorry Dan, had to steal that one!). This estate introduced the pinotage grape several decades ago. The chocolate and wine pairings were delicious. We then drove to Boschendal Wine Estate where we enjoyed our “Le pique Nique” lunch under a shady tree in the midst of vineyards rolling down from the surrounding scenic mountains. The last stop was Kapankop Estate (where they perfected pinotage). We splurged and bought a few bottles of really great wine. Hope they don’t overload the luggage too much. Sidney arranged for us to visit and eat at the restaurant of an old student/friend – Zomerlust in Paarl. The 3 course menu was fantastic. However, the braised lamb neck was absolutely stellar!! Yet another day of amazing sights, food, wine and company…..
