Shigatse is a major town in this district. The tourist attraction in this region is the Tashilumpho Monastery. It was founded by the first Dalai Lama in the early 1400’s and is currently the seat of the Panchen Lama (who was selected by the Chinese government). It features a massive Matreiya (future Buddha) that is covered in gold. (In most places, the religious artifacts and idols cannot be photographed.)
