The final stop on the official portion of the tour was Goa. I had always thought that Goa was a city – I was way off – it is a state in India. A major hippie hangout many decades ago, the area has a relaxed, beach-oriented feel although I suspect crazy parties can be found by those seeking them. The old Portuguese colonial influence can be seen in expected and unexpected ways. The obvious tell-tale signs are the many churches and old, crumbling buildings that still echo their former glory. The not so obvious influence is in the regional cuisine where Portuguese influences such as the use of vinegar and pork fused with the local dishes and techniques – made for some great eating!
